All Rise For . . . TheHighestCourts.com: An IP Law Blog for the Cannabis Industry
Cannabis. Law. Technology. I admit, it’s a pretty odd Venn Diagram. Cannabis and technology are both fields synonymous with rocket-propelled growth, whereas the law is, shall we say, a bit slower to adapt. I started this blog because I have a unique perspective to comment on legal issues surrounding technology in the cannabis industry. My career has brought me on a nonlinear path from chemistry to cannabis with a decade-long stop in the middle as an intellectual property attorney at a Chicago law firm. I now spend my days working to make the cannabis industry better.
There are a number of factors that propelled me into the action-packed world of legal blogging. While it may seem otherwise at times, there is simply not enough quality cannabis content. Consumer-sites and law firms covering court decisions can only go so deep on the issues that really matter to operators. While creating content for the industry, I often find myself searching and hoping that someone else has already made my point in writing. Instead, I find the subject covered superficially or ignored altogether. So I’ve decided to give a voice to some of the ripples produced when when cannabis, technology, and law collide.
There is also a lot of misinformation floating around the cannabis industry, particularly when it comes to the extremely nuanced world of intellectual property. Sometimes I get a question from someone in the industry and I’ll only have a few moments to give them an answer. I hope that my quick answer is satisfactory in the moment, but sometimes the questions fester. Sometimes I’ve got more to say about a topic. Sometimes they’re questions more cannabis operators should have answered in a public forum.
So this is my outlet. When I’m inevitably plagued by that pathological need to answer questions (lawyer, remember?), I’ll post my thoughts on The Highest Courts. I don’t have the bandwidth to cover everything that’s happening in the cannabis industry, and there’s already great coverage of all things regulatory. So my goal is to stick to the stories in my wheelhouse of technology, intellectual property (patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets), and advertising. As a little tease, I’ve got articles in the works touching on subjects like trade secrets, advertising terminology, and plant patents.
Welcome aboard and thanks for reading The Highest Courts.
